The Dominican community in the New York area is the biggest outside the Caribbean, and its musical traditions are a big part of its vibrancy. Its annual festival in Washington Heights features Dominican music, and some of the artists who perform at the festival appear here, covering not only the native high-energy meringue, but every aspect of Dominican music, be it the palos of Conjunto Folklorico de Alianza Dominicana or the son of Coco Merenson. A lot of this music is folkloric, as befits the Smithsonian Folkways label, but it’s never less than marvelously entertaining, like the salve of Francia Reyes, where the vocals rise effortlessly above the drums. “La Multona,” from Neri Olivares, features a scintillating, delicate play of melody, showing how Dominicans have developed the Cuban son into their own art form. But don’t be misled by the techno-bachata tag on Luis Dias’ “La Manguera”; it has nothing to do with electronic music (although Dias does also play bachata-rock in addition to this slower, gentler sound). There’s no doubting the dance appeal of the accordion-led meringue tracks. Franklyn Hernandez is masterful on them, leading an ensemble (with a terrific sax player) through the adrenalized workouts. This album doesn’t claim to be a complete representation of the Dominican musical experience in New York, by any means — but it’ll do for a start. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide.

LAVOZ/DE HONDURAS
English Translation
Bodoma has its name that has taken him to the road of success.
The culture of Honduras is taking place on the artistic music contexts, and the rhythm of garifuna that has sound of African drums sounds stronger everyday to transpose their African roots inside the multicultural community of the big apple. We’ve arrived the place where there were a lot of fans of Honduran music that is taking a lot of the style through. Music is one of the greatest of the little place of the Central America country.
Bodoma is artist who sings with huge career in the music field. We have him at the restaurant Maribella that is in the Bronx community. We started to ask the questions.
What is your name?
Carlos Norales
Where were you born?
I was born in a ship that was traveling to the city of la Ceiba to Santa Fe, Trujillo Colon, I was born in the la Ceiba, the island of the Bahia.
When were you born?
I was born in November, under the sign of Scorpio.
How did you come up the name of Bodoma?
That my artistic name has a long history. When I was in elementary school. My teacher used to call me so. My teacher Juana Gonzalez of the community of Santa Fe, she told me once: Morales, you are so active like the cities the god Sodoma and Gomorra.: Since that, my classmates started to call me Sodoma. For a year I went to Puerto Cortes. After that, I came back to the school of Santa Fe. My classmates forgot my name, then one friend, Dadus started to call me Bodoma. People started to mock that name, but the time, approximately October in ’98, I went to Mexico to find a job. I met a Mexican girl who told me that Carlos Norales, my name didn’t look good. She gave me an artistic name Emboma that means an African player. Then I decided my name Bodoma.
Where did that artistic idea come?
When I was in the community center of Santa Fe, I started to play the drums in social reunions but I wasn’t fulfilled with the drums. When I came to San Pedro Sula on the year of 1992 to 1993, I lived in the city of Alfonso Lacayo in a community of garifuna, I started to play the drums professionally and I found some friends like Santos, Bermudez and Aguan who studied playing tambor. Sandy dances Yancunu. That was the place where there I started to develop and project my career to the music.
What the other job do you do?
Weekday, I work as a technician of the refrigerator, on weekend, I dedicate to music, and I have a garifuna band that plays reggae-jazz. Another band is formed with Japanese who study English. This group is integrated with Japanese chorus who sing in garifuna language.
In October, I was in Europe with the garifuna band and August and September of recent year, we traveled Argentine, Brazil and Congo Africa.
What is your music genre?
Punta, reggae, African and Jamaican fusions with the sounds like reggae-jazz.
Are you a composer of all of music you play?
Yes. I have composed a lot of songs, garifuna music in Spanish, and also traditional music.
We know that your music is succeeding, but which are your recent exit of success, on Honduras or on international level?
Well, now, I am working on a material where I post on a radio and we are in the clubs. Now, we have to sing strong. One is ritual of Hispanic and Caribbean Sant Domingo, Puerto Rico etc. This music is the rhythm of Punta with the name of Santa Marta. We also have music that is Punta traditional that everybody likes a lot.
When you play drums, do you think of Honduras?
The drum reminds me my city where I was born. Since the drums started the sound, spiritually, I start to feel that I transpose myself. I can start to sing to the people. I think I am dancing.
One message for the artists of your genre that are starting to involve inside music
Well, I think they should try to be original that never stop, and move to different places You need to find people who never forget their roots that you should maintain the spirit of the music always positive, So you will get to the cultural houses where they realize activities. I think they should go out to the downtown, Manhattan where a lot of people admire cultural music and where they can expose their talent.
What ideas do you have in the future? Do you have ideas of having school of music?
For now, people call me from different places to collaborate about music, but I am always available when somebody needs me to do something related to music and culture.
Where dose Bodoma and his band practice?
We are practicing but most of all, I teach percussion, African garifuna dance and we have two places where we are located. One is that 163 at 126st in Harlem in the city of Manhattan. And in the Bronx, all Thursdays, 1184 at Fulton between 167 and 168 in the house of Yurumein (Honduras against HIV) that directs Mirtha Colon
What is your final message?
